"Nick, I've been trying to get ahold of you all day." I sobbed. "Please call me." I hung up the phone and it started to ring. I answered it. "Baby, I need you." I said.
"It's Johnny."
"Oh."
"Meet me in front of your house in ten minutes." He said. "I really need to talk to you."
"About what? Dating my sister?" I asked.
"No. I'm not dating her." He said.
"Oh. Just kissing her?" I asked.
"I'm not over you, okay?" He said. "Will you please meet me outside? I really need to talk to you. There is so much I want to say."
I sighed. "Fine."
"Ten minutes, okay?" He said.
I could tell her was a little tipsy. "Are you driving?" I asked.
"I'm riding my board." He said.
"Where are you?" I asked.
"Just leaving the party." He said.
"I'll come pick you up." I said.
"Are you sure?" He asked.
"Yes. I'll be right there." I said and hung up. I didn't want him to end up hurt, plus it was far to go on just a skateboard. I snuck out of the house quietly so I wouldn't wake anyone. I got in my car and drove to the party. He was standing out there with his board under his arm. He looked cold. I honked my horn and he looked up. He got in the car and I drove off.
"Where do you want to go?" I asked.
He shrugged his shoulders.
"The beach?" I suggested.
"Sure."
I drove to the beach and parked. I grabbed a blanket and we walked down to the bay near the big rocks. I sat down and leaned back up against the rocks. I took off my sandles and put my feet out so I could feel the cool water splash on my feet when the waves hit. He sat down behind me. "Crazy California people. The water is freezing at night." He said.
I giggled. "It's not freezing."
I handed him the blanket and he wrapped it around him. He pulled me back into his chest and wrapped it around me too. He sighed. "I miss you, Sam." He said. "And I know you don't want to marry Nick."
"How do you know?" I asked getting a little frustrated.
"I can tell." He said.
"I really love him." I said.
"That I don't doubt." He said.
"It's what is best for me." I said. "It'll keep me out of trouble and I'll be happy. I'll be able to grow up. Start a family."
"You ready for all that?" He asked.
"Nope."
"I don't get it." He said.
"He wouldn't make me rush into anything. We won't make any big choices until we're both ready." I said.
"So, how are you feeling right now?" He asked.
"I'm fine. . ."
"What's in your heart at the moment?" He asked.
"I'm not sure what you're asking." I said.
"I mean at the moment, how do you feel?" He asked.
"I don't know. . . I feel safe. Relaxed. . . comfortable." I said.
"And what if I was Nick right now?" He asked.
"I don't know." I said.
"Jaime says you won't go through with it." He said.
"With what? The wedding?" I asked.
"Yeah."
I sighed and felt tears building up in my eyes. "Nobody ever has faith in me." I said.
"That has nothing to do with it." He said.
I sat forward and folded my legs up in front of me. I rested my head on my knees. "It's going to happen." I said.
"Okay." He said.
"Unless Matt calls me." I said.
"What?"
"He's not going to call." I said.
"So, you're still into him?" He asked.
"His family is amazing." I said.
He sighed.
"So, unless some other amazing guy besides Nick, tells me they're in love with me, then this wedding is going to happen." I said. "I can't keep wasting my time with relationships that aren't going anywhere."
"That's silly. You're young." He laughed.
"I'm still the young girl from Newport." I said. "Whether I want to beleive it or not, I really am like the rest of them. I try to tell myself I'm different, but I'm really not."
"Yes you are." He said pulling me back onto his chest and wrapping his arms around me. "You are so different."
"I'm not different, Johnny." I said.
"I love you."
"I love you too." I said.
"Not just as a friend." He said.
"What do you mean?"
"You don't want Nick. You don't want that life." He said.
"I think I do though. The more I think about it, the more I realized it really is the life I want." I said.
"I think you belong in New York." He said.
"I definatly do not belong in New York." I said. "I hate snow."
He sighed, "Okay. . ."
I stood up and pulled my phone out of my pocket. "Be right back." I said. I started walking along the shoreline and dialed Nick's number. I let it ring again, until it went to voicemail. "This is Nick. Leave a message." I heard as I was hanging up the phone. I started crying. I started going through the numbers on my phone and ran across Kyle's number, Nick's best friend. It was late, but I was worried about Nick. I called Kyle. He answered after a few rings. "Hey, it's Sam." I said.
"Sam? Is everything okay?" He asked sounding very worried.
I giggled. "I'm sorry. I know it's late." I said.
"Do you need something? Need a ride?" He asked.
"Whoa, calm down." I giggled. "I'm fine. I was just looking for Nick. I've been trying to get ahold of him all day. I've just been a little worried about him."
"We went golfing during the day and then we went out to a club." He said. "He's probably in bed."
"Oh."
"Anything I can do?" He asked.
"No. Thanks though. I'll just call him in the morning." I said.
"Okay." He said. "Congratulations on the wedding. I always knew you two were meant for eachother."
"Thanks." I said.
"Are you sure you're okay?" He asked.
"Yeah. I'm fine." I said.
"Okay. Well, goodnight."
"Night." I said and hung up.
I walked back over to Johnny and he stood up. "You ready?" He asked.
I nodded. He put his arm around me and we walked back to my car.
