Chapter Sixty

"French toast!" I heard Clara yell. I jumped up as she opened the bedroom door. She looked confused when she saw me. "French toast on the table in the kitchen." She said. She closed the door and Conrad sat up. We both got up and started walking towards the bathroom. "Oh." He laughed. "Go ahead."
"Thanks." I smiled.
He just nodded. I went into the bathroom and locked the door to Conrad's room. I went to Matt's room and grabbed my little tote bag that had all my toiletries in it. "Sam?" Matt asked wiping his eyes.
"Yeah." I said. "I'm taking a shower."
"Wait. Let me join you." He said sitting up.
I laughed. "Yeah, I don't think so."
"Where did you sleep last night?" He asked.
"In your cousins bed. He slept on the floor." I answered. I went into the bathroom and locked the door to Matt's room. As soon as I got in the shower, I heard knocking and I could hear Matt saying something. I just ignored him. I had thought he was smart, inteligent and mature. I knew he had a fun, silly side to him, but I couldn't beleive he smoked pot. It made all the things I really admired about him not look as amazing. I finished washing up and stepped out of the shower. "French toast!" I heard Clara scream. I think she was getting upset, because nobody had joined her at the table yet. I brushed my hair and threw it back in a bun. I unlocked both of the doors to the bedrooms and went back into Matt's room. I sat down on the floor and did my make up. "Why did you sleep in Conrads room?" He asked as he put on a white t-shirt.
"Because." I said trying not to tear up.
"I may have upset you, but I don't think bunking up with my cousin is the answer." He said. He went to the bathroom and slammed the door. I finished puting my make up on, then got dressed. I was cold, so I put on my jeans and a light sweatshirt. I sat down on the bed and waited for Matt to get out of the bathroom. He didn't come back out for about a half hour and he looked furious when he finally did. "You don't want to eat breakfast?" He asked. He walked over to his dresser and pulled out a pair of socks.
"I was waiting for you." I said.
He didn't say anything.
"I would feel awkward going down there without you." I explained.
"That's kind of stupid, don't you think?" He said.
"No."
He put on his socks and started walking down the hall. I ran after him. We sat down at the table. Clara was already eating and it was just her and Conrad at the table. "Could you pass me the syrup?" Conrad asked Matt.
"Nope." Matt replied.
"Matthew?" Clara asked.
"What?" He asked.
"Pass him the syrup." She said.
He picked it up and pounded it onto the table in front of Conrad.
"What the hell is your problem this morning?" Conrad asked him.
"Was it his idea?" Matt asked me.
"What?" I asked.
"Bunking up with him?" He asked.
Conrad laughed. "That's what this is about?"
"Yeah. Keep your hands off of her." Matt said.
"You're an idiot." Conrad told him.
"All I wanted was a nice breakfast with my family. Half of you don't come and the other half just want to argue." Clara said. She stood up, picked up her plate and left. I heard the tv turn on in the living room. Matt sighed. "Let's go." He said to me.
"I'm not finished eating." I said.
"I'll take you to the restaurant above the water. They have great food." He said. He walked over to the coat rack and put on a flannel shirt. "Your Mom just made everyone breakfast." I said.
"He doesn't give a shit." Conrad said.
"Well, that's where I am having breakfast. Are you coming?" He asked.
I didn't know what to say. I would have felt bad not eating the french toast, but I also would have felt weird being left behind with a family I didn't even know.
"Let me take a few more bites." I said. I scarfed them down quickly and put the plate in the sink. I followed Matt out the door and we started walking through the neighborhood. It was a really nice neighborhood. I liked looking at the houses. After a few minutes of walking and neither of us saying a word, Matt grabbed my hand and held it in his. "Did he try anything with you?" He asked.
"No." I said. "And I'm sorry that I slept in his room. I could imagine how bad it looked to you. . . and your Mom."
"It's just. . . I know him. He likes to compete with me." He said.
"You were just acting weird and unpleasant to be around." I said.
"I apologize." He said.
"How often do you smoke pot?" I asked.
"Just with Dan." He said.
"He seems like a bad influence." I said.
"Nah."
"Okay." I said.
"You're going to love this place." He said.
We kept walking and passed a few shops, then started walking up to a building that was over the water. We crossed a small bridge to get to it. We were seated right away. It was pretty quiet. There were just a few people there chatting and drinking coffee. We sat down and he ordered a few things without even asking me what I wanted. I laughed, because that was exactly how my father was AND Nick.
