Chapter Thirteen

While Ryan was away at the movies with David, I decided to make a nice dinner. I cooked Spaghetti with meatballs, Garlic Bread and a cheesecake for dessert. I set the table nicely and hoped he would get home soon after I was finished. I set the food down on the table and poured us each a glass of wine. I realized at that moment that I had turned into my mother. I always said I wouldn't, but it was obvious I had. I lit a candle and put it in the middle of the table. I sat down and looked at it. I realized how ramantic it looked. "Shit." I said to myself out loud. I blew out the candle and put it away. Just then, Ryan walked in. He stopped and looked at the table. "I made dinner." I said.
"Oh." He said taking off his coat. "You didn't. . ." He hung his coat up in the closet by the front door. He walked over to the table and sat down. "You know you don't have to cook for me." He said.
"Well, I got bored cause you were gone all day." I said.
He gave me a strange look and laughed. "Sorry, my darling." He said.
I giggled. "Shut up. I didn't mean for it to come out that way. I just mean I was bored cause I was alone and had nothing better to do." I said.
"Well, thank you." He said.
I smiled and sat down. I got the feeling he was a little freaked out and was taking what I did the wrong way anyway. I guess the candle wasn't the only thing making it obvious that I was trying to impress him. Maybe he didn't have feelings for me. "I think I'm going to go dancing again tonight." I said. "I really liked that club."
"Oh that's cool. I just plan on reading tonight." He said.
"Oh." I said as I took a bite of my food.
"Sam?" He asked.
I looked up at him.
"Nevermind." He sighed.
"What?" I asked.
"I just feel like I am leading you on or something." He said.
I let out a fake giggle. "Don't be silly." I said. "I think you're looking way too far into me cooking a simple meal for us."
"Am I?" He asked. "I'm sorry. I guess that is one of my downfalls. . . over-analyzing everything."
I forced out a smile. I felt like crying. "You look bothered." He said.
"Excuse me." I said getting up. I went to my bathroom and shut the door. I started crying. I felt so stupid. I heard him knock on my bedroom door. "Sam?" He called out.
I cleared my throat. "I'll be right there!" I said. I wiped my eyes and went back out to the kitchen. I sat back down. "Can I ask you something about Matt?" He asked.
"What about him?" I asked annoyed.
"Are you attracted to him?" He asked.
I just shrugged my shoulders.
"Sam?"
"Yes. I am. So." I said, continuing to eat.
"Okay."
"Why do you ask?" I asked.
"Just wondering." He answered with a smile.
"I'm not dating him nor do I have any intention to." I said.
"That's fine." He laughed. "I don't have a problem with him. I was just wondering."
I sighed. "I'm sorry if me making this dinner freaked you out. I was just trying to do something nice."
"Well, thank you. I appreciate it." He said.
He didn't deny that it freaked him, so I knew I was right. The rest of dinner was quiet. He cleaned his dishes when he was done. "Have fun dancing." He said. He kissed the top of my head. "Thanks again for dinner. You're a great cook." He went to his bedroom and I went straight to mine. I didn't want to go dancing alone! I was hoping he would want to go with me. I layed in bed and turned on the tv. I ended up falling asleep early and waking up in the middle of the night. I went out to the kitchen to get a glass of water. Ryan was sitting at the table eating ice cream. "Hey. What are you doing up?" He asked. "How was dancing?"
"I didn't go dancing." I said frustrated.
"Oh. What did you do?" He asked.
"I was in my bedroom." I said.
He laughed. "In your bedroom?" He asked. "Why didn't you say anything?"
"You said you were reading."
He stood up. "Sam, what's wrong? You know I don't mind you being around, even if I am reading." He said.
"I don't want to sit and watch you read." I said.
"I could have read out loud to you." He said.
"Like I would know what was going on in the book." I said rudly.
"Sam." He said. He walked over to me. "It's short stories, but that is not the point. What is wrong? You've been acting weird."
"You kissed me." I said.
"Yeah. It was fun. I thought you had fun too." He said.
"You know what, Ryan? You are leading me on. And confusing the shit out of me." I said as I stormed into my bedroom and slammed the door. "Sam, I didn't think you liked me like that." He said softly.
"Well, I do!" I shouted.
"I'm sorry." He said.
"You acted like you liked me too!" I yelled starting to cry.
He opened the door. "When you're caught up in the moment, you're not thinking straight." He said. "I do like you, but I worry about your ex and Matt. You're going to be working with Matt. Seeing him almost every day."
"I am a very trusting person." I said. "And I would never cheat on a boyfriend."
He smiled. "Yes, I'll be your boyfriend."
"I didn't ask." I said.
He laughed. "Your pouting face is so cute." He said sitting down next to me on the bed.
I rolled my eyes and he took my hand laughing. "Can I be your boy toy?" He asked.
I tried so hard not to laugh, but I couldn't hold it in. "Yes." I said. "But, I won't be calling you my boy toy."
