I was so pissed off after dinner with the family. Nick wouldn't keep his hands off me, everyone kept asking Johnny about his goals for the future, Uncle Chris wasn't sticking up for me and Anna wouldn't stop trying to impress Bryce and Shawn. She was being so fake, I just wanted to punch her. When dinner was over and everyone was starting to get up and mingle, Johnny went off with Jaime again. I stormed up to my bedroom. I just layed in my bed trying not to cry. After a few minutes, I heard a light tap on my door. I looked up. "Hey, Kiddo."
It was Uncle Chris.
"What?" I asked rudly.
"Did you want to join us for croquet?" He asked.
"No."
"Why so glum?" He asked.
"I just don't want to play." I said.
"Come on, Kiddo. I need you on my team." He said smiling.
"No thanks."
"But, we're the best." He said. "We'll get to do our happy winning dance."
I couldn't help but let out a giggle.
He laughed. "Come on."
I sighed. "Why didn't you stick up for me earlier?"
"That's what this is about?" He asked.
I nodded.
"I'm sorry. I was trying my best to keep my mouth shut. I didn't want to upset anyone any more than they already are." He said. "I know they're all trying it keep their cool, but they are all very upset about Nana."
"I know." I said.
"Now what do you say we go kick some major ass?" He asked smiling.
"Okay. Let me change real quick and I'll be out there." I said.
He held up his hand for a high five smiling. I slapped it really hard. "Hey!" He said laughing. "That hurt."
I just laughed. He left and I changed into my jeans and a t-shirt. I went out to the backyard to the grassy area where they always set up the croquet. "Great." I said when I saw Mike out there on Anna's team. I went on one date with him and since then, he hits on me every time I see him. "Gorgeous." He said smiling when I walked up.
"My name is Sam." I said.
"What in god's name is your problem?" Anna asked.
I rolled my eyes. Uncle Chris put his arm around me. "She's had a rough night. Let's be nice." He said. I looked at him and smiled. I sat on a bench and waited for my turn to start. I looked over at the guys. They were on the basketball court again, laughing and joking around. I really felt left out. "Your turn, babe." Uncle Chris said. I got up and hit the ball. I did really good and Anna gave me a high five smiling. She was nice to me the rest of the game. Everyone always seemed to listen to Uncle Chris. He was very well respected in the family. When we finished playing, it was pretty late. All the family had already left. I went to my bedroom to change into my swim suit, so I could go for a swim. "I'm heading to bed." I heard Johnny say as he walked into my bedroom.
I smiled. "Goodnight."
"Night." He said and left. I layed back on my bed and sighed. I just layed there thinking for a while. I grabbed my beach towel, put on my slippers and headed to the pool. Whenever it was dark out, I always went to the indoor pool downstairs. When I walked into the pool area, I heard giggling. "Anna?" I asked.
"Shit!" I heard Jaime yell. I looked around the corner. Jaime had a naked girl on top of him in the pool.
"Oh my god!" I said covering my mouth. I rushed back to my bedroom. I changed into my pajama's and walked down to the kitchen. I didn't want to wake Lucille, so I made myself some popcorn. I walked down to the theatre and turned on the movie, Grease. I ended up falling asleep there and I didn't wake up until the next morning when Lucille came into the room with the vaccum on. I poked my head up. "Miss Samantha." She said. She turned off the vaccum. "I'm sorry, dear. I didn't know you were in here."
I yawned. "I fell asleep watching Grease."
"Well, you better rush and take your shower. Your Grandfather will be here for breakfast at eight sharp." She said.
I sighed.
"What is it, dear?" She asked.
"Everything here is at a certain time. I'm just not use to it anymore." I said.
"Your family likes to eat together." She said.
"I know." I said smiling.
"I think it's quite nice." She said.
"It is." I said. I got up and rushed to my bedroom. I took a quick shower and got dressed. I blow dried my hair, then curled it. I sat down at my vanity and got excited when I saw all of my make up. I ended up puting a lot on, because I wanted to look good. I remembered Lucille showing me all the steps to doing your make up good. She had went to beauty school and learned how to do hair and make up. She did that for fifteen years, before she decided to be a maid. I slipped on my purple clogs to go with my purple blazer and walked down to breakfast. As I was halfway down the steps, I heard whispering. I stopped and looked up. It was Jaime. He was signaling for me to come back up. I sighed, rolled my eyes and walked back to the top of the stairs. "What?" I asked with annoyance.
"Don't tell Mom or Dad." He said softly as he looked around to see if anyone was coming.
"Who was that?" I asked.
"Shhh."
"Well?" I whispered.
"Just my friend Jen." He said.
"Friend?"
He nodded. "Yeah. . ."
"You're dumb." I said. I turned around and went back down the stairs to the dining room. My parents, Anna and Johnny were already sitting down waiting for breakfast. There was a knock at the door. "That must be Pop." Mom said. She looked like she was about to cry. I cleared my throat. I tried not to look at her. I sat down next to Johnny. Everyone was very quiet. Lucille walked in and put the last of the food on the table. Dennis walked in with Papa. Mom got up and gave him a hug. He walked around and gave Anna and I a hug. The room was pretty quiet until Jaime walked into the room.
"Papa." He said smiling.
"Hi." Papa said giving him a hug.
They both sat down. "Remind me after the funeral, I have a few things for you kids that were Nana's." Papa said. Mom started crying. "She's in a better place now, Princess." Papa told her.
Mom just nodded as she blew her nose in her napkin. I looked at Anna and I could tell she was trying her hardest to hold in her tears. I was not looking forward the events that were ahead of us that day.

The funeral was beautiful. I don't think a single person left with dry eyes. Even Johnny looked upset. I wasn't sure if it was from the funeral, or from seeing me so upset. We had a reception back at the house with catered food and drinks. It was amazing to see how many people came by to give there condolences. After a couple hours the place had pretty much cleared out. Only a few close family members were left.
"I'm going to go for a walk in the garden." I told Johnny. "Do you want to come?" I asked him.
"No, thats okay. I kind of want to get some sleep. Maybe think a little." He said.
"Is everything okay?" I asked him.
"Yeah. It just brings back memories of when my Uncle died of cancer last year. We were kinda close." He said.
"I'm sorry." I told him, and held his hands.
"It's okay. Wake me up later, okay." He said, and stood up. He kissed me and then left. I sighed. I had really wanted to get to walk with him for a little while. I needed someone. I got up and walked out back, past the outdoor pool and basket ball courts, and followed the path to our garden. When I got there I walked around and looked at all the flowers and bushes. I sat down on one of the benches and thought of Nana. For the first time, it hit me that she was really gone. I pulled my legs up on the bench, and wrapped my arms around my knees. I rested my forhead on them, and started to cry really hard. Right then I really wished Johnny was there. I just wanted someone to put their arm around me.
"Hey sunshine. My world crashes when I see you so upset." I heard a voice say. I smiled, knowing exactly who it was. I lifted my headup and wiped my eyes.
"Hey Nick." I said. He walked over and sat down next to me, and put his arm around me.
"My dad is still here smoking cigars with your dad and your Uncle Chris. I saw you wander into the garden, and thought I would come check on you." He said.
"Thanks. I'm glad you found me." I told him, and sniffed.
"Are you okay?" He asked.
"Yeah. Considering." I said. He hugged me, and kissed my cheek.
"I miss you bear." He said.
"Miss you too." I told him. I started to cry some more, and he hugged me tighter, and let me cry on his shoulder. I stopped after a few minutes, and took a deep breath.
"I miss Nana." I told him.
"We all do. She was sweet." He said. "Like you. She didn't let money and status get in the way of life."
"Thanks." I told him.
"Where is Johnny?" He asked. I just shrugged.
"Laying down. He said this all reminded him of when his uncle died. He looked upset." I told him.
"More upset then you right now?" Nick asked.
"Nick, where is this going?" I asked him.
"I just don't want you to get hurt. He should be out here comforting you." He said.
"Instead of you?" I asked.
"Well, I like being out here. I miss being with you, but yes. He should be out here." He told me.
"It's okay." I told him.
"Do you love him?" Nick asked.
"No. I care a lot about him, but I don't think I love him. Not yet anyway." I said.
"Do you still love me?" Nick asked.
I thought about it for a second.
"Yeah, I do." I said.
"Then why did we breakup?" He asked.
"You are the one to throw the first punch, remember? You called me." i told him.
"I know. I regretted it right away though." He said.
"Maybe we just need to see what else is out there. I mean, we were both eachothers first love, first everything." I said.
"Maybe. But I can't picture anyone else in my future." He said.
"Can we talk about this another time?" I asked.
"Of course." He said, and kissed my cheek again. I felt warm when he did.
"Do you want to be alone for a few minutes?" He asked.
"No, thats okay. I'm ready to go back inside. I want to check on mom." I told him.
"Okay, come on Sunshine." He said, and took my hand, leading me back to the house.
